Founded in 1904,  Big Brothers Big Sisters  is the oldest and largest youth mentoring organization in the United States. In 2004, the organization served more than 225,000 youth ages five through 18, in 5,000 communities across the country, through a network of 470 agencies.  National research  has shown that the positive relationships between Big Brothers and Big Sisters and their Littles have a direct, measurable, and lasting impact on children’s lives.

Big Brothers Big Sisters one-to-one mentoring makes a huge difference for the youth it serves.  Research consistently demonstrates that Big Brothers Big Sisters mentoring helps at-risk youth overcome the many challenges they face.  The most compelling evidence was found by  Public/Private Ventures (P/PV)1,  showing that Little Brothers and Little Sisters are:
  • 46% less likely to begin using illegal drugs;
  • 27% less likely to begin using alcohol;
  • 52% less likely to skip school;
  • 37% less likely to skip class;
  • More confident in their schoolwork performance;
  • Able to get along better with their families.

Volunteers of Big Brothers Big Sisters of Mid Michigan are just that - volunteers. They are people who have a genuine desire to make a difference in the life of a child. The do not have specialized training and cannot take the place of a good therapist. Please understand that sometimes young people have needs that cannot be met by our agency.
