Mid Michigan Big Brothers Big Sisters now offers three ways to get involved with mentoring through our agency!

  • Traditional Community Based Match, matching an adult with a child in the community.
  • High School Bigs, matching a high school student with a child enrolled in the S.P.A.R.K.S program meeting only after school (available in Beaverton, Farwell, and Harrison)
  • Big Brothers Big Sisters "Big2Little" after school program , matching adult and high school volunteers with Clare elementary and middle school students every Tuesday at Brown Corners Church facility.

Community based matches differ from the other two types of mentoring because "Bigs" are allowed to meet with their "Littles" in the community and contact them via phone or email. High School Bigs and the Big2Little program only allows for contact between matches at their designated place (ie. school or the Browns Corners building).

Community Based Matches

A Big is someone that donates one to four hours per week to a child, doing things they enjoy such as hunting, fishing, cooking, shopping, crafts or watching movies. The Big serves as a role model and friend to a child in a one on one mentoring relationship.

To become a Big, we require all prospective volunteers to:

  • Complete an application;
  • Have a criminal background check;
  • Have reliable transportation;
  • Be at least 18 years old

Once the application process is complete, you will be contacted to arrange a meeting at your home. At this time we will explain the program more thoroughly and answer any questions you might have. The home visit provides us with the opportunity to get to know you better so we can match you better with a child.

After the home visit, we will send a letter stating that you are either accepted or denied. If accepted, we then begin working very hard to find just the right child for you!
